A-ha moment
Me (frustrated): Why is it that you guys behave for daddy and leave all the whining and bad behavior for me?
Sasha: Because he gives us stuff we are not supposed to have.

A-ha. Now I get it.

Elephant
Wanted to freeze this memory in time. Natasha grabbed a little blue wooden elephant from Miranda. Miranda chased Natasha around the house for a good five minutes. Around the dining room table. Then the living room couch. Then the dining room table again and the couch. Sasha and I set back and laughed. I love you girls. You are the best.

Current Mood: Weepy

2012 so far
So far, 2012 has not been so kind. Sasha got the stomach flu around December 28 of 2011. I subsequently picked it up in the first days of January. Natasha got a cough on December 31 which turned into a full-blown flu by January 2 (yes, same day I got the stomach flu). Then Masha picked that up--oh joy. Masha still had a fever last night. It is January 11 and we have yet to have a barf- and/or fever-free day this year. On top of it all, Sasha got diagnosed with a hazelnut allergy today (after having a reaction to a French pastry that Dave brought home from downtown). I am now a proud carrier of an epi pen. Trying to stay positive.

Quick update
Babies--9.5 months; Sasha 4 yrs 3.5 months.

Miranda is quite a mover and shaker. She scoots around on her bum and pulls herself with one or two arms. She also gets on all fours, moves back and forth and can do a few shaky crawls, but I would not call it full-fledged crawling yet. Yesterday she even got into down-dog pose and then set down by herself. Natasha has pulled herself into standing position in her crib; gets on all fours and rocks back and forth. Not really crawling or scooting, but can turn 360 degrees on her bum or tummy.

Sasha is doing fairly well in her ballet class; knows quite a few names for poses. She is a bit obsessed with Wizard of Oz, but got too scared watching the movie. We are working on the book. She and Dave are reading the full version of Winnie the Pooh which she is enjoying. She still loves to play with the babies.

Wish I had time to write a bit more.

Baby update--almost 8 months
Both babies are now sitting. Both are sick. So is Sasha. Miranda is coughing like a tiny sputtering engine--sounds terrible, but Dr. Ettner said it will pass. Natasha and Miranda have runny noses--how sad :(. Sasha is doing a bit better and has been to school the last two days. She went to see Jeoffrey ballet's Cinderella with Dave this past Saturday, but had to leave after just 30 minutes since she was coughing so loudly.

Lately, Sasha loves pointing out that she does or does not like a certain thing anymore--toy, food, etc. "When I was little, I liked hummos, but I don't like it anymore." Go figure.

News
Natasha set on her own for a few minutes. Miranda is just trying to stand--does not care much for sitting. Both babies tried banana today and yesterday--not at all impressed. Miranda made the same face she did when she was 2 days old and was offered a bottle of formula--eeeew. Natasha got her third tooth.

All of us are sick with a cold. Sasha's been coughing all night long.

Quick twin update
Both girls can sit on their own for about 1 minute. They also get on all fours and swing forwards and backwards. Natasha is a big talker--bababamamama. Miranda makes a lot of growls. No solids yet, but already bought a second high chair; mayble will try some steel cut oatmeal tomorrow.

Natasha and Miranda
At 6.5 months, Miranda was 15lbs2ozs and Natasha was 17lbs14ozs. They are healthy and happy. Natasha is a lot more emotionally out in the open. She is quick with a smile, it is easy to make her laugh (a fake cough or sneeze would usually do it). She is also much quicker to start crying if she is overstimulated (by her big sister), tired, hungry or bored. Miranda is more reserved with expression of her feelings, but is still very sweet and cuddly. Both girls are great nursers and have yet to try any solids, although I am just so tempted. Will try to hold out until they are able to sit on their own. They have both been turning from stomach to back and back to stomach for a while now. Miranda is a bit quicker in her movements--she has less baby fat on her. Today we read Polar Bear Polar Bear, What do You Hear, and Natasha went bananas. She almost jumped out of her bouncer--she was so excited to see every single picture in the book.

Who was Sasha?
Sasha and I were driving by the hospital where she and her sisters were born.
Sasha: Look Mommy, this is the hospital where I was born and the babies were born, right?
Me: Yes.
Sasha (after hesitating to think a little bit): Mommy, when I was a baby, who was Sasha? (meaning who was my wonderful big sister?)

Introductions
Sasha began staying at extended care at school three days a week until 6 p.m. Dave and I came to pick her up the other day and she decided to introduce us to her teachers.

Sasha: This is Lena and this is Dave.
Teacher: Dave is also known as ... {expecting to hear "Dad")
Sasha: Well, I call him "sweetie."

***

On the way to school:

Sasha: Mommy, when we get to school, I will cry a little bit and then I will stop. (She indeed fulfilled her promise).

***

Me: Sasha, would you like to go swimming?
Sasha: Yes, that is TERR-iffic.
***

Me: Sasha, did you like that pasta?
Sasha: Delicioso!
***

Sasha: This elephant speaks Spanish. He doesn't speak Russian.

Apparently, Sasha has Spanish classes in preschool. I had no idea.

Carousel
We went to the zoo yesterday. Sasha is both scared and excited to get on the carousel. She got scared of the animals that go up and down, but liked riding in the "stationary" swan that just goes around. This morning she excitedly was telling us that she "loved the carousel and was scared of the animals going up and down, but the swan was not scary, because it was attached." Papa was surprised that she used that word.

From nanny's words,
Nanny: Sasha, are you going to sleep in your new bed when your baby sisters are born?
Sasha: No, I am going to give them my new bed and sleep with mama and papa.

From my mom's words, Sasha was sitting at the table and put her head down on her arms.
Mimi: Sashen'ka, why are you sitting that way?
Sasha: I am thinking.

Ice cream love
What our nanny (Katia) told us:

Sasha: Katia, do you have ice-cream at home?
Katia: Yes.
Sasha: Do you have cookies at home?
Katia: Yes.
Sasha: Could you bring some?

**************

Last night, Sasha did get some mango sorbet for desert. Somehow, she ended up emptying her bowl before Dave and I finished ours. She turns to me, moves her empty bowl towards my full one and says, "Mommy, can we switch?" I gave her a little spoonful of mine, which she also ate. She then turns to Dave, "Papa, can we switch?"

She is obsessed with ice-cream. She's probably only had it about 10 times in her life, but most of her free-play is concentrated around making ice-cream or feeding ice-cream to someone else.

New favorite food: chocolate rice milk.

New habit admired by parents: when in doubt, first say "No!"

Favorite story that needs to be retold every night: About Sasha, mama, papa, a kitty and a doggy. Preferably, involving the game of hide-and-seek.

Favorite author: Dr. Seuss. She loves The Lorax, Cat in the Hat, All the Places you'll Go, and One Fish Two Fish.
